5/21/2023 0 Comments Bloodrose andrea cremerMostly because of how the love triangle was handled in that book, no other can compare. I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this before, but as much as I love writing love triangles and reading about love triangles – the drama, the angst, the heartbreak – ever since reading Clockwork Princess I can’t reading about them anymore. So my memories of the plot line and characters are a little hazy, hence why the summary of the first two books is quite vague.Īnyway, Bloodrose takes place right where Wolfsbane left off with Calla going after Ren. Between Nightshade and Wolfsbane it was nine months and between Wolfsbane and Bloodrose it was four months. While on the run, the Searchers capture Shay and Calla and they reveal that everything Calla thought to be true, isn’t.īeing completely honest here, there were a lot of time lapses between when I read Nightshade – the first book in the series – Wolfsbane – the second book in the series – and the final book Bloodrose. Eventually, she chooses Shay over Ren and runs from her destiny. Through interesting events, Calla and Shay fall for each other, but she is still meant to wed Ren, who isn’t too happy about this new student and how close he has become to her. She is questioning this destiny when a new student – Shay – enrolls in her school and he intrigues her. She is destined to be wed to another alpha wolf – Ren – uniting their two packs. Quick summary of the series: Calla Nightshade is an alpha wolf, created by people call the Keepers to keep the peace.

5/21/2023 0 Comments Chimamanda feminismFeminism was boiled down to "raise your sons and daughters in a different way" but this largely ignores that the world also raises us. I also got the impression that she was trying too hard to defend her position as a feminist and soften the movement/word for men when sometimes it is better to stand in it and not sugarcoat your movement for anyone. Instead we got some coddling of benevolent mysoginists ("they don't mean harm") and a strange segue into how her brother is a hot feminist and men too can be feminist if he can. I expected a challenge of patriarchal structure on a social, cultural and governmental level from an African/Nigerian perspective, but I did not get that. Through her novels, she voiced gender equality and women empowerment. There were some bright moments in this book/speech (bottom power - of a woman - taps into someone else's power), but it did not interrogate fully why we need feminism. Chimamanda is a feminist and the author of ‘ Purple Hibiscus,’ ‘Half of a Yellow Sun,’ and ‘Americanah.’ However, Chimamanda has also made her stance known regarding gender equality. I expected more from this book and thought she was going to build from the speech given at her TED talk, but oh well. 5/21/2023 0 Comments The Cyberiad by Stanisław LemThe translation featured numerous arcane English words, I had to frequently call upon Kindle’s built-in dictionary to explain them, but it was not easy, I had to figure out which were real English words and which were made-up words (of which there were a plenty). The book was originally written in Polish but has been skilfully translated to English with the humours making their way, which normally gets lost in translation. Initially, you don’t get it, but as you keep reading, you get a feel of the brilliance of the author and understand that the tons of scientific sounding words from Astronomy, Quantum Physics and Artificial Intelligence are there to be humorous and to be philosophical. Though classified as Science Fiction, I will put the book under “Fantasy Fiction” & “Philosophy Fiction”. The constructors create civilizations, thinking machines, dreaming machines, philosophical machines, machines that can create machines, move around planets, create dragons, then dragon-hunting machines, mind-altering machines to save kingdoms and machines to help them to escape from ruthless kings. The book chronicles the adventures of two master-engineers, called constructors, named Trurl & Klapaucius, who could build anything that they set their mind to. Written in 1965 by the Polish writer Stanislaw Lem, “ The Cyberiad” is a collection of stories that happen in a distant future, when space travel between galaxies is a simple affair. What a book this was! I was blown away by the breadth and depth of imagination of the author. 5/21/2023 0 Comments Siddhartha a novelThe Indian Censor Board, at that time, did not even permit on-screen kissing in Indian films. Simi Garewal's nude scene caused controversy in India. Siddhartha learns that the secret of life cannot be passed on from one person to another, but must be achieved through inner experience. This search takes him through periods of harsh asceticism, sensual pleasures, material wealth, then self-revulsion and eventually to the oneness and harmony with himself that he has been seeking. The film tells the story of the young Siddhartha (played by Shashi Kapoor), born in a rich family, and his search for a meaningful way of life. The locations used for the film were the holy city of Rishikesh and the private estates and palaces of the Maharajah of Bharatpur. It was shot on location in Northern India, and features work by noted cinematographer Sven Nykvist. Siddhartha is a 1972 Indo-American drama mystery film based on the 1922 novel of the same name by Hermann Hesse, directed by Conrad Rooks. 5/21/2023 0 Comments The royals series erin wattIf you stay, we’ll break you so bad that you’ll be crawling away.” -Erin WattĮlla Harper is taken by Callum Royal at the beginning of this story because of her father’s death and leaving Callum her guardian. She encounters a patient who tells her he can send her two hundred years into the past to spend three months in the rugged Yellowstone wilderness at the dawn of the mountain man era. Nurse and avid backpacker Aimee Donovan is offered the opportunity of a lifetime. Overall, this was a very good book and listen. Just now and again it seemed a little flat. I found the narration okay-usually quite good. This book was written in 1987, which helps provide some understanding of differences between social awareness then and now. But I felt that they were handled by the author as well as possible. This is a book with a few somewhat graphic scenes, and I generally prefer not having to listen to descriptions of that sort. However, Peter Decker, the police sergeant who is both there at the original discovery of the bodies and works the case, finds himself torn as the depravity he has to face leads him to question the faith he has been moving toward and brings enormous tension to his relationship with Rina. This book deals with the discovery of two bodies by Rina's son, just at the beginning of the book, and the plot involves investigating some of the darkest corners of humanity to solve their murders. The characters are well-drawn, and the interactions among them very believable. I really like the balance of police procedural, personal relationships and information about the Jewish faith that Faye Kellerman creates in this series. 5/20/2023 0 Comments God Don't Like Ugly by Mary Monroe"Watch out Toni Morrison, there is a new sister in town. He has been supporting himself since he was 18, runs a successful business, and has raised a son, but Pike felt more like a 25–30-year-old eternal bachelor than a 40 year old father. Pike felt immature and much younger than 40 (or whatever his exact age was). Anything greater becomes ingenuine to me, mostly because authors struggle to write characters of a large age gap in a believable way. This romance has a age gap of like 18+ years, and 10 years is about the highest age gap that I can get behind. The problem with this novel, was a matter of taste for me. Like any good romance, there were high levels of angst, grovel and drama. But that connection is challenged when Jordan and Pike realize that the boyfriend she speaks of is actually his son, Cole.īirthday Girl started off strong. At the movie, she meets the charming Pike, who she has an almost immediate connection with. One night, after getting off work early and being unable to contact Cole to pick her up, Jordan attends a special showing of an 80s movie. Birthday Girl by Penelope Douglas is about a university student, Jordan, who is living with her boyfriend Cole, who is a deadbeat and is constantly making messes that Jordan has to clean up. |
